Finish to Scale - Why Your Home Feels “Off” (and How to Fix It)
Share
Ever walked into a new home and thought, “Why do those windows look like they belong in a dollhouse?” Or found yourself squinting at a kitchen island lit by pendant lights so tiny they belong in a jewelry box? How about squeezing past an oversized dining table crammed into a small dining space? Oh, and don’t forget the short kitchen cabinets awkwardly floating in a room with towering ceilings.
These are classic examples of ignoring the scale of a space—and the results are hard to unsee once you notice them.
Why Scale Matters
When you’re renovating or decorating, it’s crucial to take a step back and really assess the scale of your space. The key is to choose fixtures and furnishings that feel balanced and harmonious with the room. Otherwise, you end up with a space that feels mismatched, awkward, or downright uncomfortable.
Case Study: The Troyer Project
One of my favorite examples is the Troyer Project, a home with ceilings so high (12 feet!) it could double as an echo chamber. The challenge? Making the space feel cozy and inviting without losing its grandeur.
The solution? Oversized fixtures.
Office Chandelier: 32 inches wide, 30 inches tall—and under $350.
Dining Room Chandelier: 48 inches wide, 30 inches tall—and a steal at under $200.
These statement pieces didn’t just fill the space; they anchored it. They drew the eye upward, showcased the room’s scale, and balanced the massive proportions without feeling cold or cavernous.
Bring It Home
If you’re staring at your space wondering why it doesn’t feel quite right, it might be time for a fresh perspective. Whether you’re battling tiny windows, mismatched lighting, or awkward furniture, understanding the scale of your space can completely transform its vibe.
